Big Increases in Area Unemployment

ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Labor is reporting big increases in the unemployment rate in throughout much of Northeast Georgia. The unadjusted rate in Athens rose a full percentage point, 7.4% to 8.4%, between December 2009 and January 2010. In Gainesville, the rate rose nine-tenths of a point, from 9.1% to 10% during the same period.

The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose to 10.4 percent in January, topping the previous record high of 10.3 percent reported in December. This marks the 28th consecutive month that Georgia has exceeded the national seasonally adjusted rate, which was 9.7 percent.

NEGA County-by-county: Banks up .7% from 7.2% to 7.9%, Barrow up .6% from 10.5% to 11.1, Clarke up 1.0% from 7.3% to 8.3%, Elbert up 1.6% from 11.4% to 13.0%, Franklin up 1.1% from 12.1% to 13.2%, Habersham up 1.0% from 9.8% to 10.8%, Hall up .9% from 9.1% to 10%, Hart up 1.2% from 12.6% to 13.8%, Jackson up 1.1% from 10.8% to 11.9%, Lumpkin up .6% from 11.4% to 12%, Madison up .8% from 8.6% to 9.4%, Oconee up .9% from 6.2% to 7.1%, Oglethorpe up 1.2% from 8.7% to 9.9%, Rabun up 1.8% from 11.3 to 13.1, Stephens up .7% from 11.2% to 11.9, Towns up 2% from 8.6% to 10.6%, Union up 1.4% from 9.4% to 10.8% and White up 1.4% from 10% to 11.4%.
