ATLANTA - A bill that would allow gun owners with permits to carry firearms onto college campuses and into churches and bars has passed a key Senate committee.
The Special Judiciary Committee voted 7 to 1 on Monday in favor of Senate Bill 308. State Sen. Mitch Seabaugh, the bill's sponsor, said he's trying to clarify the firearms carry law for Georgia's 300,000 gun owners with permits to carry weapons.
Under the bill, restaurant owners, churches and other private property owners could choose whether to allow guns on their property. The Board of Regents would determine the policy for the state's college campuses.
Regents officials and several college presidents have said it would endanger students, faculty and staff and weaken state law.
