altATHENS - A University of Georgia professor who has strong ties to the Haiti says she and others will be working to help rebuild an orphanage, school, and clinic in a rural community. And Dr. Leara Rhodes hopes that a upcoming benefit will help raise money for their rebuilding efforts.

Dr. Leara Rhodes is a board member of "Partners in Progress", an organization that has helped people in Haiti for several years. At least 30 of the children who attended the organization's school died in the country's earthquake nearly two weeks ago.

To help raise funds, Athens community members are hosting a benefit this Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 8:00 pm Town and Gown Theatre on Grady Avenue off Prince. They're requesting a $5.00 donation

Here's more information on what the benefit will include: Community members are coming together to produce a variety show of local talent. Some of the people who will be included are members of the Town and Gown players to include Kelly McGlaun-Fields as a storyteller; local musicians are the Moyuba drummers, The Usual Suspects of the Athens Folk and Dance Society, and singer/songwriter Christopher Becerra. Dancers include members of the Sulukule Dance troupe, Rajni and Christy Fricks, who will be performing an Egyptian cane dance and tribal fusion sword and zill piece; and the Shaki Project dancers. Artists contributing their work to the silent auction include Tara Faragoza with other items to include artist jewelry, weaving from India, antiques, dancing classes, illustrated coffee table books, Tarot card readings, facial from Elizabeth Alder, Balance Pilates classes, and more. Town and Gown player, Shane Clayton is organizing the silent auction.

Volunteers from the current Town and Gown in rehearsal production of *Mame* are pitching in.

One hundred percent of everything raised will go to the Haiti relief.
